(Beachwood)- Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) is fighting to keep the air traffic control tower at the Cuyahoga County Airport in Richmond Heights that is set to close soon due to sequestration cuts.
Portman says he doesn't believe safety will be compromised but there will be fewer flights. The problem with sequestration is it's across the board without flexibility so he has supported and voted for flexibility to get the administration the ability to prioritize.
Portman addressed a number of other issues with WTAM’s Colleen O’Neill. Portman is hopeful the Strongsville School Board and Teacher's Union can resolve their differences and "get those good teachers back into the classroom."
Portman has recently been in the news for changing his stance on gay marriage. "Two people who want to get married ought to have the freedom to do this." Portman says he spent a couple of years thinking about the issue after his son came forward and said he was gay.
Portman was in town today touring University Hospitals Monte Ahuja Medical Center in Beachwood.
