New bridge floated to its new home

(Cleveland) - The Columbus Road Lift Bridge has reached its final destination.

The structure was floated down the Cuyahoga River to Columbus Road this morning, where crews continue to connect it to that stretch of roadway.

David Marquard with the Cuyahoga County Department of Public works said they didn't have any problems placing the bridge on a large barge yesterday, after rolling it from the construction site on the West Bank of the Cuyahoga.

However, they decided not to float the bridge to its site on Monday because the currents were too strong.

Cuyahoga County Construction Engineer Joe Charif, P.E.

Marquad told Newsradio WTAM 1100 they experienced no difficulty in floating the bridge today. Scores of spectators lined the river’s banks to see tugboats push the huge monstrosity to its new home.

Marquad said the project has faced few problems outside of weather related delays during the winter.

Marquard hopes traffic will be moving along Columbus Road and over the bridge by October.
