96-5 Kiss FM was barely 2 years old this week in August 2003.
These were the top 10 most played songs on KISS/Cleveland this week in 2003.
Do you remember all of these? Which ones do you think still hold-up?
#10> Drift Away - Uncle Kracker Ft. Dobie Gray
Kid Rock's lackey teams up w/ the guy behind the original early 70s pop standard & gets a hit that even Moms liked.
9> Can't Hold Us Down - Christina Aguilera Ft. Lil' Kim
An MTV TRL classic. Remember when they'd barely show the actual video on TRL? It would be like 27 seconds of the video & then they go to some skank out in Times Square doin' a shout-out to her boyfriend or something? This was from the same album (Stripped) as "Dirrty", "Beautiful", "Fighter" and the follow-up to this, "The Voice Within". This was her "X-tina" phase. Lol. By the way, if you don't know who Lil' Kim is - she was basically the Nicki Minaj of ten years ago.
8> Unwell - Matchbox 20
Before they became Soccer Mom Rock Royalty, teens actually listened to MB20. Their songs got loads of airplay on HIT stations like Kiss. These guys had a bunch of pop-rock/alternalite hits in the late 90s/early 00's. This was the biggest hit off their 2002 More Than You Think You Are LP.
7> P.I.M.P. - 50 Cent
People tend to forget how unbelievably HUGE 50 Cent was in 2003. Seriously... go Wikipedia 50 Cent & see how many massive radio hits he had between 2003 and 2006. Pretty impressive. Get Rich Or Die Tryin' was a pretty classic hip-hop rekkid. The video version below is the Snoop Dogg remix which we played as well.
6> Rock Wit U (Aww Baby) - Ashanti
"Murder Inc!" Haha. Man - we played a TON of R&B back in 2003. Cool! Didn't like this one nearly as much as 2002's "Foolish". Didn't she date Nelly for awhile? They still together? What happend to those two? You know what I just thought of... There was no Twitter in 2003. We didn't even have MySpace back then. Dayummmm.
5> My Love Is Like... Wo - Mya
She's goin' for an Aaliyah vibe here. Only problem is Timbaland ISN'T producing.
4> Where Is The Love - Black Eyed Peas Ft. Justin Timberlake
Wow... Two artists that are still actually putting out HITS 10 years later! (Sorry Christina - you need Maroon 5 & Pitbull to make hits these days). This was actually the first BIG one for the Black Eyed Peas. Before this they were a pretty socially conscious/afrocentric/alternative type of hip-hop act (think: Poor Man's Fugees). I think the Peas owe Timberlake a TON of gratitude. He was on fire that year w/ his first solo album, Justified. Him singing the hook on this track certainly didn't hurt. He was so busy he couldn't do the video.
3> Magic Stick - Lil' Kim Ft. 50 Cent
TWO tracks in the top 10 for Fiddy. This was my jam!
Anyone remember the dope-azz Billy Squier remix?!?
Mashes it up w/ "The Stroke". I LOVED this!
2> Shake Ya Tailfeather - Nelly/P.Diddy/Murphy Lee
From the Bad Boys II Soundtrack.
...and the most-played song on 96-5 Kiss FM this week in August 2003 was...
1> Right Thurr - Chingy
All three songs in the top 3 are hip-hop/rap?!? We were GANGSTA back in the day! I preferred the follow-up, "Holidae Inn" w/ Snoop Dogg. Either way- Chingy earns the distinction of having one of the worst songs of 2004 ("Balla Baby" - AWFUL, awful, corny!) AND of giving me one of the best "artist liners" ever. Those are the things you hear where a popular artist says "You're listening to 96-5 Kiss FM!". The one Chingy recorded for me in Chicago was a friggin' classic. If I can find the mp3, I'll share it here one day.
