The Top 10 most played jams on 96-5 Kiss FM this day in October 2002.
We were, like, a baby radio station back then. Barely a year old. Awww. How cute.
10> Angie Martinez - If I Could Go
I went clothes shopping w/ Angie Martinez. The two of us walked around some mall in Chicago filming & recording for a goofy radio promotion. It was silly & awkward. But I did buy a cool sweater that day & heard "Do You Realize?" by the Flaming Lips on the in-store P.A. I don't remember too much about Angie, to be honest.
9> Jennifer Lopez - Jenny From The Block
This song was kind of a big deal.
Anyone remember when Shepard Smith on Fox News had a little J. Lo slip-up. Tee-hee.
Now... the song -
8> Ashanti Ft. Ja Rule - Happy
Follow-up to the #1 hit, "Foolish", which I loved. This was good too. Old-school R&B Mary Jane Girls throwback vibe.
7> Eminem - Lose Yourself
Brand-spankin' new. The night it dropped, I played it for an hour non-stop when I was workin' at Kiss in Chicago. People were freakin' out. Everyone knew it was an instant classic. 11 years later & we still play it on Kiss in Cleveland every now & then. And not even his best rekkid. He was good ,that Eminem. Y'all need to keep the radio locked when #Berzerk comes on. If you keep tunin' out when we play it, we're gonna have to drop it. So listen to it, dammit. It's good!
6> No Doubt Ft. Lady Saw - Underneath It All
Jeesh. When's the last time you heard THIS track on the radio??! This would sound good on 106.5 The Lake. I'm gonna have to send their Music Director an email.
5> Kelly Clarkson - A Moment Like This
Shout-out to Brian Dunkelman. Was that his name? I didn't even watch the 1st season of American Idol. But I remember the finale was a HUGE event. We had people calling in all night w/ updates. This song totally takes me back to fall '02 in Chicago. I'm gettin' all misty over here.
4> Vanessa Carlton - Ordinary Day
The follow-up to the enormously popular piano jam, "A Thousand Miles". We did a promotion w/ her in Jamaica. That was the same trip I partied w/ two guys from 98 Degrees. Drew & Justin, maybe? I remember being so drunk I admitted to them I thought they were black when I first heard "Invisible Man". I really did! Vanessa would later bang the guy from Third Eye Blind. Haven't heard from her since. I can't believe Kiss in Cleveland played this song that much. 4th on the playlist? Weird.
3> Cam'ron Ft. Juelz Santana - Hey Ma
Now we're talkin'! This was a smooth headbobbing jam. I first heard this on the Rick Party Show on Kiss/Chicago when we were doing a live broadcast from our Summer Jam (or Kiss The Summer Goodbye?) concert. I interviewed Avril Lavigne that day. Hear my Avril Lavigne Story on Spreaker audio podcast supplement thingy. I'll post a link above too. This song got played on Kiss/Cleveland for YEARS afterward. Get a load of the "Easy" by the Commodores sample in this track. Neat.
2> P. Diddy Ft. Tammy Ruggieri, Ginuwine, Loon & Mario Winans - I Need A Girl Pt. II
There was no way in HELL I was gonna list all of those damn people when "talking this song up" on the radio. This was the follow-up to "I Need A Girl Pt 1" - a totally different, much wimpier hit featuring vocals by Usher.
1> Nelly Ft. Kelly Rowland - Dilemma
Nelly was massive back in the early 2000s. This was the follow-up to the Song Of The Summer, "Hot In Herre". Fun Fact: Kelly Rowland had a hit without Destiny's Child BEFORE Beyonce. Who knew?!?
